The former UK justice minister and Conservative MP, Crispin Blunt, has been fined £1,200 after pleading guilty to multiple drug possession charges. Blunt, 65, admitted to four offences at Westminster Magistrates’ Court, following a police raid on his home in Surrey in October 2023. Also, authorities found him in possession of substances including cannabis, methamphetamine which is commonly known as crystal meth and GBL, a chemical sedative. During sentencing, Deputy Chief Magistrate Tan Ikram criticised Blunt’s actions, noting that his former role overseeing prisons, probation and justice placed him in a position of public trust. Blunt pleaded guilty to one count of possessing a Class A drug and three counts relating to Class B substances. The charges emerged while police were investigating a separate allegation of rape, although Surrey Police later dropped that case due to insufficient evidence after an 18-month inquiry. While in court, Blunt later argued that he had been the victim of blackmail and extortion by a drug dealer. He also used the opportunity to criticise existing drug laws, suggesting that criminalising possession causes more harm than good. He told the court his personal experiences, including hosting drug-fuelled gatherings, had shaped his views on drug policy reform. Prosecutors from the Crown Prosecution Service maintained that there was sufficient evidence to proceed and that pursuing the case was in the public interest. The former UK justice minister and Conservative MP, who served under David Cameron between 2010 and 2012, later chaired the Foreign Affairs Committee. He lost the Conservative Party whip after his arrest and stepped down as an MP in 2024.
