Former presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso has announced his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing the need to align with a more effective political platform capable of driving meaningful change in Nigeria.
The development was confirmed in a press statement released on Sunday, March 29, 2026, marking a significant shift in Kwankwaso’s political journey.
Decision Driven by Political Realignment
In the statement, Kwankwaso explained that his decision followed a careful assessment of the country’s current political direction.
He noted that Nigeria’s evolving political environment requires what he described as “strategic realignment,” a factor that influenced his decision to exit the NNPP.

According to him, remaining in the party would limit his ability to contribute effectively to national development.
“The present situation demands a repositioning that will enable meaningful impact and sustainable progress,” he said.
Search for a Stronger Platform
Kwankwaso stated that his resignation, though difficult, became necessary as he seeks a political platform that can better address Nigeria’s challenges.
He emphasised that his focus is on identifying a party that offers the best opportunity to “effectively change the nation.”
The former Kano State governor stressed that his move is not about personal ambition but about ensuring that his political efforts are aligned with a structure capable of delivering results.
Despite leaving the NNPP, Kwankwaso reaffirmed his commitment to Nigeria’s progress, stating that his actions are guided by the desire to see the country move forward.
He maintained that the current political climate demands fresh ideas, stronger collaboration, and a renewed sense of purpose among political actors.
Observers say his resignation could signal a broader political realignment ahead of future elections, as key figures reposition themselves within Nigeria’s political space.
Kwankwaso confirmed that his resignation takes immediate effect, adding that he will soon announce his next political move.
While he did not disclose the party he intends to join, he expressed confidence that his next platform would provide the structure needed to achieve meaningful and lasting change.
