Nigerian singer Oludipe David, popularly known as Spyro, has expressed concern over what he describes as the loss of intrinsic value in modern music.

Speaking during an appearance on the Adesope Live show, the “Who Is Your Guy” crooner, who is known for promoting conscious and clean music, said today’s music industry is dominated by superficial content that prioritises rhythm and trends over meaningful messaging.

According to Spyro, earlier generations of artists were intentional about communicating values, regardless of the genre they performed.

“In the past, artists were passing meaningful messages regardless of whatever genre they were doing. But now, music is just vibes. We are just vibing,” he said.

While acknowledging that vibes are enjoyable and have their place, the singer insisted that music once carried emotional depth that moved listeners.

“In as much as vibes are cool, I feel like music has lost its intrinsic value. Back then, you would get goosebumps listening to music. Vibes are cool. But how can we infuse messages and values into vibes?” he asked.

Spyro argued that the shift from value-driven music to trend-focused content has contributed to moral decline in society.

He stressed that many artists today create songs primarily for commercial gain rather than for positive impact.

“A lot of the decadence that we have in society today can be traced to the fact that music has lost its value. We are now just singing for money. A lot of us are into the business for money, not to make impact,” he added.

The singer, who has built a reputation for producing family-friendly music, continues to encourage artists to be more intentional about the messages they pass through their songs.
