Following approval by Mid and East Antrim Borough Council’s planning committee, Planning permission has been granted for the construction of 403 new homes in Carrickfergus and County Antrim. The £70 million development, located in north of Prince Andrew Way, will be delivered in phases over the next five to six years and is expected to create around 200 construction jobs. The scheme includes 40 social housing units and 41 affordable homes, alongside a mix of private properties. As part of the approval, a long-awaited access road in the area must be completed before building begins. Upgrades to the North Road and Prince Andrew Way junction are also planned to help manage traffic flow. The development will also feature a new play park and open spaces for both new and existing residents. Senior planning officer Henry McAlister acknowledged existing traffic congestion but said the new road infrastructure would help ease pressure as traffic disperses more efficiently. He added that extensive consultations had taken place, with the Department for Infrastructure and NI Water confirming there is sufficient capacity to support the project. Despite unanimous approval by councillors, the proposal attracted 104 objections, mainly over traffic, road safety, sewerage capacity and noise concerns.
