Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, on Wednesday held a closed-door meeting with the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, and Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, at the Government House in Bauchi.

The development reflects broader trends in APC political updates across Nigeria.

According to reports, the meeting was conducted privately, with state party executives excluded and journalists barred from covering the proceedings. The discussions, which lasted several hours, were held entirely behind closed doors, fuelling speculation about their purpose and possible political implications.

Attempts by reporters to obtain official comments from the participants were unsuccessful, as both Mohammed and Yilwatda declined to speak, describing the engagement as strictly private.

The timing of the talks has raised questions among political observers, particularly given the involvement of key figures from different political alignments. While Mohammed is a prominent opposition figure, the presence of the APC national chairman and the Kano State governor has sparked speculation about possible realignments or strategic consultations ahead of future elections.

Analysts note that such high-level, undisclosed meetings often signal ongoing negotiations or efforts to manage political tensions. However, in the absence of official statements, the exact agenda and outcome remain unclear.

The development underscores the fluid nature of Nigeria’s political landscape, where alliances and affiliations continue to evolve as politicians position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.

 Background

Bala Mohammed, born on October 5, 1958, in Bauchi State, began his career as a journalist before moving into public service, where he built a reputation in governance and administration.

He entered national politics in 2007 when he was elected Senator representing Bauchi South Senatorial District under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party. During his tenure, he gained prominence for his outspoken contributions to national discourse.

In 2010, he defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, a move that reshaped his political trajectory and aligned him with the ruling party at the time.

That same year, he was appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory by former President Goodluck Jonathan. As FCT Minister from 2010 to 2015, he oversaw infrastructure development in Abuja and implemented urban reforms, including controversial demolition exercises aimed at restoring the Abuja master plan.

Mohammed was elected Governor of Bauchi State in 2019 under the PDP and was re-elected in 2023, further strengthening his political influence in the North-East.

His administration has focused on infrastructure, healthcare, education, and rural development.

Despite the growing speculation surrounding his recent political moves, Mohammed remains a central figure in opposition politics. Analysts say his next steps could play a significant role in shaping alliances ahead of upcoming elections.
