A prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Hon. Abraham Ajiya, has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), citing internal crises and a lack of democratic practices within the opposition party.
Ajiya, a former candidate in the contentious North Central Vice-Chairmanship election, announced his resignation from the PDP during a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday.
He stated that his decision followed extensive consultations and a desire to join a platform better suited to serving the FCT’s residents.
“Many may ask reasons for the decision, but you and I know that my journey with the PDP has not been cordial or promising for a young and upcoming politician like me,” Ajiya remarked.
Detailing his grievances, Ajiya accused PDP leaders of manipulating the Jos zonal election process, alleging they pressured him to step aside for a “less qualified candidate.”
His refusal led to marginalisation, and his subsequent legal challenge proved futile.
“The election was a mere formality predetermined by party leadership. The appeal panel delivered a verdict the same day without my knowledge. This is unheard of,” he lamented.
Ajiya described his defection as a necessary step to protect his political career, stating, “After due consultation, it became imperative to seek new ground to further my political ambitions.”
He expressed confidence in the APC as a platform to realise his vision for the FCT.
