The All Progressives Congress has won five out of the six chairmanship seats in the 2026 Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, leaving the Peoples Democratic Party with a single victory. Results announced on Sunday by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) showed the APC securing Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Abaji, Bwari, Kwali and Kuje, while the PDP triumphed in Gwagwalada. Gwagwalada: PDP Breaks Through In Gwagwalada Area Council, PDP candidate Mohammed Kasim defeated the APC’s Yahaya Shehu, polling 22,165 votes against 17,788. Announcing the outcome, the Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, said: “I am the returning officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Gwagwalada chairmanship election held on February 21, 2026. That Mohammed Kasim of the PDP, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.” INEC’s breakdown showed: • PDP – 22,165 • APC – 17,788 • APGA – 1,687 • ADC – 1,366 Bwari: APC Retains Stronghold In Bwari Area Council, APC candidate Joshua Ishaku secured 18,466 votes to emerge winner. The Returning Officer, Mohammed Nurudeen, declared: “I am the returning officer for the 2026 FCT Area Council, Bwari chairmanship election held on Feb. 21, 2026. That Joshua Ishaku, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.” Official figures indicated: • APC – 18,466 • ADC – 4,254 • ZLP – 3,515 AMAC: Maikalangu Re-elected Christopher Maikalangu of the APC was returned as chairman of AMAC after garnering 40,295 votes. “That Maikalangu of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected,” the AMAC Collation Officer, Andrew Abue, said. The results were as follows: • APC – 40,295 • ADC – 12,109 • SDP – 2,185 • NNPP – 1,694 • PDP – 3,398 Abaji: APC Claims Clear Victory In Abaji, Umar Abdullahi Abubakar of the APC polled 15,536 votes to defeat PDP’s candidate, who secured 4,547 votes, while the ADC recorded 37 votes. Abubakar was subsequently declared elected. Kwali: Comfortable Win for APC The APC’s Nuhu Daniel triumphed in Kwali with 17,032 votes, defeating PDP candidate Haruna Pai, who scored 8,575 votes. Daniel was returned elected after securing the majority of valid votes cast. Kuje: Narrow Margin In Kuje Area Council, APC candidate Danjuma Shekwolo won with 17,269 votes, edging out the PDP’s 15,824 votes, while APGA polled 4,305. Shekwolo was declared the winner following the final collation. With five councils in its column, the APC emerged as the dominant party in the FCT elections, while the PDP’s sole victory in Gwagwalada prevented a clean sweep.
