Omawumi opens up on her relationships with late Dagrin, Dokta Frabz

Nigerian singer and songwriter Omawumi Megbele has opened up about her past relationships with late rapper Dagrin and late music producer Dokta Frabz, shedding light on long-standing rumours surrounding her connection with both men.

Speaking in a recent interview with Jay On Air, the award-winning vocalist clarified that contrary to public speculation, her relationship with Dagrin was purely platonic.

The pair were widely rumoured to have been romantically involved following the success of their 2009 collaboration, “Thank God.”

Omawumi explained that she and Dagrin shared a close friendship built on mutual respect and artistic connection. “Dagrin was my guy; we used to hang out together.

“He was a fantastic person,” she said, describing the late rapper as humble, funny, and full of life. She added that their relationship was never romantic but was rooted in their shared love for music and creativity.

Dagrin, whose real name was Oladapo Olaitan Olaonipekun, was one of Nigeria’s most influential indigenous rappers before his untimely death in a tragic auto crash in April 2010.

His legacy continues to inspire many Nigerian hip-hop artists today.

While clarifying her friendship with Dagrin, Omawumi also confirmed that she had indeed been in a romantic relationship with late music producer Dokta Frabz, whose real name was Ayorinde Faboro.

The Bottom Belle crooner described Dokta Frabz as a passionate and exceptionally gifted producer who deeply loved music.

“I was drawn to Dokta Frabz because he was such a lover of music. He was incredibly talented. He would look into my eyes while singing, and I would be cheering,” she recalled emotionally.

Omawumi revealed that their shared passion for music brought them close, leading her to spend much of her time in his studio during the early stages of her career.

“Because of that, I was always around him, in his studio. I met most of the music industry figures through Dokta Frabz. We actually dated,” she added.

Dokta Frabz, known for producing hits for some of Nigeria’s biggest stars, including D’banj, Naeto C, and Omawumi herself, passed away in 2021, leaving behind a strong legacy in the Nigerian music scene.

The singer, who has remained one of the most consistent female voices in Afrobeats and soul music for over a decade, noted that both Dagrin and Dokta Frabz played important roles in shaping her musical journey.

Her reflections serve as a touching reminder of the friendships, collaborations, and relationships that have helped shape the vibrant Nigerian music industry over the years.
