Lagos govt hails Supreme Court ruling on lottery regulation

The Lagos State Government has commended the Supreme Court of Nigeria for its historic ruling affirming the constitutional authority of states to regulate lotteries and gaming activities within their jurisdictions. 

In the case Attorney-General of Lagos State and Ors vs. Attorney-General of the Federation & Ors (Suit No. SC/1/2008), the court nullified the National Lottery Act, declaring the regulation of lotteries a residual matter under state control.  

Describing the judgment as a victory for federalism and the rule of law, the Lagos government lauded the contributions of key political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, who has championed the cause of true federalism for years. 

They also praised former Governor Babatunde Fashola for pursuing the legal challenge and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law.  

The ruling reinforces the position of the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) as the sole regulatory body for gaming activities in Lagos State. 

The government called on all illegal and unlicensed operators to regularize their operations through the LSLGA or face prosecution.

“This outcome is a testament to the tenacity of Lagos State leadership in defending its constitutional rights and ensuring a transparent and responsibly managed gaming sector,” said Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso.  

The state government expressed commitment to fostering a business-friendly environment for legitimate operators while safeguarding residents from the adverse effects of unregulated gaming.
