Dikko commits to building sustainable sports economy

The newly appointed Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Dikko, announced on Wednesday that Nigeria’s journey toward a sustainable sports economy has begun.

Dikko made this statement during a handover ceremony in Abuja, where former Minister of Sports, John Enoh, passed on the commission’s affairs in a brief but significant event.

Reflecting on his history with Nigerian sports development, Dikko noted, “History has a way of coming full circle. In 2008, I served as a consultant to the House of Representatives and drafted the National Sports Commission Bill—a job I did pro bono. Sixteen years later, I am here, tasked with implementing the work I helped put together.”

Dikko emphasised that President Bola Tinubu’s vision for the NSC is to harness the full potential of Nigeria’s sports economy.

He highlighted the need for a shift in mindset, away from solely focusing on competitions and medal counts and toward comprehensive domestic sports development.“When we establish a solid foundation,” Dikko explained, “the results and medals will naturally follow sustainably. This should be our new mindset.”

Dikko underscored the importance of a fresh approach, noting that the current focus on competition is largely a form of “consumption” that drains resources with little impact on Nigeria’s domestic sports ecosystem and economy.

Instead, he advocated a “production” model that prioritizes deliberate sports development, setting a solid structure and framework to create a sustainable sports economy that would naturally lead to competitive success.
